Peter Obi’s ex-campaign DG Okupe says Tinubu best among 2023 presidential candidates
Chief Doyin Okupe who served as campaign Director for Peter Obi in the early stage of the 2023 presidential election, has said that President Bola Tinubu was the best candidate among those that contested the election and therefore deserved to be the winner
Okupe, also a former presidential spokesman was the spokesman of the Labour Party and a close ally of the party’s presidential candidate, Obi before he was indicted by Nigeria’s anti+graft agency for fraud, leading to his resignation from the position of LP’s spokesman.
Tinubu contested against two major candidates, former vice president, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Peter Obi. Tinubu who was candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC was declared winner in the much disputed election.
In an interview with Channels TV, Okupe also hailed Tinubu for the ongoing reforms of his administration, saying the president inherited a very bad economic situation from the past government and is doing his best to address the malaise.
He said during Friday interview on Channels TV “Politics Today,” that hindsight has provided him the opportunity to realise that Tinubu is the best for the job.
He said- “Let me tell you, of all the people that actually ran for President in 2023, by the benefit of hindsight, Bola Tinubu is the best.
“I have seen Peter Obi, I have been with Atiku Abubakar, I also knew Bola Tinubu many years ago. I have not seen him in the last 7 to 8 years, that is not the point but he is the best in terms of capability, commitment and knowledge.”
Okupe said Nigerians cannot judge the Tinubu administration like they judged other administrations because he came in after it seemed like governance was abandoned for 8 years.
Insisting that one year is too short to judge the current administration, Okupe said that if Nigerians will give Tinubu some time, he will do well.
Asked if it is not a betrayal to Obi whom he campaigned for saying that Tinubu is the best candidate in 2023, Okupe disagreed.
According to him, his support for Obi was borne out of the mutual belief they both had that a Southerner should be the president which led to their exit from the PDP.
Okupe toured around the country with Obi soliciting votes ahead of the PDP primary. However, when it didn’t work out in the PDP, both men left for the Labour Party where Okupe became the director-general for Obi’s campaign.
Okupe would later resign from his position following a judgement by the Federal High Court in Abuja which found him guilty of receiving over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.
In January, he also resigned from the Labour Party citing ideological differences.
Two Nigerian-born scientists—Adesola Adegoke, a researcher at Arizona State University (ASU), and Seunnla Adelusi, a PhD candidate at the Université de Sherbrooke, Canada—have been named among the 20 global winners of the Digital GreenTalents Award 2025.
These two Nigerians were announced among the winners during a virtual ceremony held on 25 November. In a statement following the virtual announcement ceremony, the organisers said the 20 awardees for this year joined from different time zones, including “very early morning in Canada and evening hours in the Philippines.”
The digital Green Talent Award is an annual initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that recognises outstanding young researchers whose work advances sustainability through digital innovation.
Each year, 20 scientists are selected from a competitive global pool for their cutting-edge ideas at the intersection of digitalisation and environmental sustainability.
Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor, on Sunday paid a visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
The governor was accompanied by officials of the Sokoto State Government during the closed-door visit.
Nnamdi Kanu was recently moved to Sokoto after he was convicted on terrorism-related charges and handed a life sentence by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Governor Otti had earlier promised to pursue every lawful and political avenue to ensure that Kanu gets justice. Sunday’s visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts by the Abia State Government regarding his case.
