Ex-Nigerian president Jonathan becomes first African to win Sunhak Peace award

Former Nigerian President,Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has been announced as the winner of the 2025 Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award, which will be presented by the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation in Seoul, South Korea.
A statement by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, announced that the ex-Nigerian leader becomes the third recipient and the first African leader to win this category of the Sunhak Award, following former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The 2025 award ceremony, the sixth in the series, will take place in Seoul on Friday, 11 April 2025, where Dr Jonathan and other laureates will be honoured.
According to the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee, Jonathan is being recognised with the Founder’s Prize for his consistent mediation efforts and pro-democracy initiatives aimed at fostering peace across Africa. His work is particularly evident through the organisations he leads, including the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, GJF, the West African Elders Forum, WAEF, and the International Summit Council for Peace, ISCP.
The Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award and the Sunhak Peace Prize are two categories of awards presented biennially by the committee to individuals and organisations acknowledged for their contributions to world peace and human development.
Past winners of the second category, the Sunhak Peace Prize, include former Senegalese President Macky Sall; the President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina; Dame Sarah Catherine Gilbert, co-developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine; and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
Jonathan will receive his award alongside three individuals recently announced by José Manuel Durão Barroso, Chair of the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee and former President of the European Commission, as winners in the other category.
The awardees include Patrick Awuah Jr., Founder and President of Ashesi University in Ghana; Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen; and Wanjira Mathai, Regional Director for Africa at the World Resources Institute.
The founder of the Sunhak Peace Prize, Hak Ja Han Moon, who leads an interreligious and international movement for peace, stated in her pre-event address that the lives of the laureates serve as an inspiring testament to how peace can be achieved through concrete actions and cultural transformation.
“Over the past decade, the Sunhak Peace Prize has identified and honoured individuals who have dedicated themselves to addressing urgent global challenges based on its three core values: respect for human rights, reconciliation of conflicts, and ecological conservation,” she said.
The biennial Sunhak Peace Prize, established in 2015, recognises individuals and organisations that have demonstrated extraordinary service to global peace and wellbeing in one of three areas: sustainable human development, conflict resolution, or ecological conservation.

Breaking: Court of Appeal rules in favour of Turaki -led PDP candidate for Osun governorship election
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Thursday, ruled that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Gubernatorial Candidate in Osun State was validly nominated by the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
The court also ordered INEC to list the PDP logo on the ballot ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
The Court held that access code is neither a creation of the Constitution nor the Electoral Act; rather, a creation of INEC’s guidelines and cannot, in any way, override the provisions of the Constitution.
Section 288 of the Constitution does not specify the method for nominating candidates; it only states that the names of candidates should be forwarded to the Commission.
The court further held that the defendant (INEC) should take steps to include the name of the appellant on the ballot paper.
Additionally, the court ruled that the primary election conducted by the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP was a valid primary election in law.
The three-man panel of justices—Justice Mahmud, Justice Jaro, and Justice Ankawere, was unanimous in its judgment.

Breaking: NHRC sets up situation room to monitor and document hate speech, intimidation, threat to life ahead 2027
The national Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has set up a situation room to monitor and document all incidences of hate speech, intimidation and threat to life by politicians and other actors ahead of the 2027 general election.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concerns over rising incidences of hate speech, intimidation and outright threat to life by highly placed individuals, especially politicians and religious leaders.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chef Tony Ojukwu, SAN, revealed this on Thursday in Abuja at a press conference.
He said the situation room would enable the Commission harvest data, analysis and document persons, agencies and others involved in the negative statements in order to ensure they are properly tracked and brought to book by relevant agencies.
Ojukwu also took journalists on a tour of the newly set up situation room.

Breaking: NHRC expresses concern over rising incidences of hate speech, threat to life ahead 2027 elections
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concerns over rising incidences of hate speech, intimidation and outright threat to life by highly placed individuals, especially politicians and religious leaders.
At a press conference in Abuja Thursday, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chef Tony Ojukwu, SAN, recalled statements credited to Senator Francis Fadahunsi and Sheikh Yahya Jingir and described the das dangerous with capacity to set the nation ablaze.
He called on politicians, religious and traditional rulers, among other stakeholders to call their supporters and faithful to orders.
He urged government to act before rhetorics turn to violence, saying the forthcoming election in Osun State should serve as example of Nigeria’s capacity to conduct political contest in compliance with international best practices.
