It was celebration galore on Tuesday May 20, 2024 for the Nigerian Air Force as the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar commissioned 15 projects completed in different locations across the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The unveiled infrastructures, all aimed at improving the welfare of Officers and Men of the Nigerian Air Force were commissioned as part of the activities commemorating the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) st 60 Anniversary Celebration.

These high-profile projects were completed barely 11 months after Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar assumed office as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Air State.

Some of the key projects commissioned include a 40-bed NAF Hospital, a sports complex, the NAF Microfinance Bank, a fire bay, and a 56-shop market plaza, all located at the NAF Valley Housing Estate, Asokoro.

Also inaugurated were the NAF Airmen Mini Base in Karu, the NAF Officers Quarters in Garki and Karimu, a 6-floor new HQ NAF Annex Building at Gudu and a brand-new state-of-the-art Airport Commandant’s office at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Marshall Hassan Abubakar also conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed NAF Centre of Excellence Complex situated at Bill Clinton Drive, along the Airport Road which is set to house 4 critical institutes: the Institute of Airpower Studies, the Air Force War College, the Air Warfare Centre, and the Air to Ground Integration School.

It is envisaged that when completed, the Centre would offer first-rate air power education and learning as well as foster innovation in air power doctrinal development.

In his remarks after the unveiling ceremony, Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged the NAF’s struggles with housing shortages due to its expanded force structure, a challenge now being tackled head-on by his leadership.

He also emphasized that these initiatives fulfill a key element of his command philosophy: maintaining a highly motivated force by enhancing welfare and infrastructural renewal.

The CAS then stressed the importance of properly claiming and securing all NAF-owned properties, while noting that NAF’s dedication to safeguarding its assets and reclaiming encroached lands will assist in creating space for future operational facilities and accommodations for its growing workforce.

The CAS further revealed that as the NAF celebrates its 60th anniversary, the commissioning of these projects aligns with his transformative agenda to reposition the force for continued growth and development, while also serving as a fitting tribute to NAF’s six decades of service and sacrifice.

According to him, “These advancements not only bolster the NAF’s operational capabilities but also significantly elevate the welfare of its personnel, ensuring the force is well-prepared to confront future challenges.”

He then urged NAF personnel to make the most of these facilities and expressed gratitude to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Bola Ahmad Tinubu, for his unwavering support.

….The Commission wants IGP to address use of excessive force by police

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old Nigerian, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, on April 26, 2026, in Efurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Dr. Ojukwu described the incident as “deeply disturbing and a direct assault on human dignity, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the rule of law.”

He stressed that no Nigerian should lose their life at the hands of those sworn to protect them, reiterating that every life matters and must be protected.

According to him, “the reported action of the officer involved is condemnable, unacceptable, and completely inconsistent with the principles of justice and a civilized society.”

The statement which was signed by Hajia Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, quoted Ojukwu to have expressed grave concern over the recurring incidents of excessive use of force by law enforcement officers and called on the Nigeria Police Force to take urgent and decisive steps to address the issue.

He specifically urged the police authorities to subject officers deployed on special duties to periodic mental and psychological evaluations to ensure they are fit to carry arms and engage with civilians responsibly.

Dr. Ojukwu further called for the immediate disciplinary action against ASP Nuhu Usman in line with extant laws and police regulations.

He also emphasized the need for the Nigeria Police Force to fully implement the recommendations of the Commission’s Panel on Police Brutality as a necessary step toward meaningful reform and prevention of future violations.
“The Commission demands immediate arrest and a transparent investigation into the incident, dismissal of the officer involved, and swift prosecution in accordance with the law.

We hereby call for adequate compensation and justice for the family of the victim,” he stated.

He warned that justice delayed only deepens public distrust in state institutions and undermines confidence in law enforcement.

The Executive Secretary assured that the NHRC will continue to monitor the case closely and will persist in its advocacy for accountability, justice, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.
“Nigeria must never normalize brutality. Justice must speak louder than silence,” he concluded.
