As the 2027 general election draws near,  calls for Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to join the presidential race has intensified with the latest coming from the Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group (GPSCG) which urged the former president to intervene so as to avert Nigeria’s disintegration as well as save citizens from the current hardship they face.

It would be recalled that many groups, associations, ethnic and religious affiliations have in recent time, staged rallies and addressed press conferences, calling on Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to declare intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. The former president is yet to respond to any of the calls.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Comrade Jeff Okoi, Director General of GPSCG,  said they were compelled to gather and make the passionate plea to Jonathan in response to the urgent need to rescue Nigeria “from the grip of uncertainty, division and stagnation; as well as to restore Nigeria to the path of stability, progress, and shared prosperity.”

Comrade Okoi said “I warmly welcome you to this historic World Press Conference convened to formally articulate our collective position on the future leadership of our great nation, Nigeria.

“The Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group is a coalition of concerned citizens and patriots who genuinely desire the progress, unity, and prosperity of Nigeria. We are united by a shared commitment to national renewal and a firm belief that our country must move forward with purpose, stability, and inclusive leadership.

“Today marks a defining moment in our national journey—a moment that calls for reflection, courage, and decisive action. Our nation stands at a critical juncture, confronted by serious challenges that demand experienced leadership, national unity, economic revitalization, and restored global confidence. These are not ordinary times; they require a leader with proven capacity, calm disposition, and a clear vision for national renewal.

“It is against this compelling backdrop that we gather to make a solemn and patriotic declaration—a declaration not only of hope, but of urgency to rescue Nigeria from the grip of uncertainty, division, stagnation, and restore her to the path of stability, progress, and shared prosperity.

“Following extensive consultations across all geopolitical zones and meaningful engagement with critical stakeholders, the Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group (GPSCG), in alignment with millions of well-meaning Nigerians, hereby formally calls on His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to answer the call of history and offer himself for the 2027 Presidential Election of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is a call for national redemption—an earnest appeal for the return of purposeful, stabilizing, and people-centered leadership capable of rescuing our nation at this critical time.

“This call is not driven by sentiment, but by conviction—anchored on competence, experience, and a verifiable record of leadership.

“Dr. Jonathan remains a statesman of uncommon humility, a symbol of democratic stability, and a respected global ambassador of peace. His leadership was defined by respect for the rule of law, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and a historic commitment to peace and national unity that elevated Nigeria’s standing in the international community. His legacy continues to stand as a benchmark for responsible, selfless, and accountable leadership.

“At a time when our nation seeks unity across ethnic, religious, and political divides, his leadership offers a credible bridge of trust, reconciliation, and national rebirth—qualities essential to rescuing Nigeria from its present challenges.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, fellow Nigerians, the growing concerns about the narrowing of democratic space and the concentration of political power must not be ignored. Democracy thrives on inclusiveness, healthy competition, and fairness—not suppression. Nigeria must remain a nation where every voice counts and every aspiration finds expression within a just and equitable political system.

“Nigeria needs a leader who understands governance, appreciates our diversity, and commands both national legitimacy and international respect. We require leadership that will prioritize economic recovery, strengthen national security, empower our youth, and drive meaningful institutional reforms necessary to rescue and reposition our nation.

“Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan embodies these qualities—steady in leadership, inclusive in approach, and committed to national unity and progress.

“Through this call, we are not merely presenting a candidate—we are advancing a clear and compelling national vision: a united and indivisible Nigeria; a nation rescued from despair and restored to hope and shared prosperity; and a future anchored on integrity, inclusiveness, and accountable leadership.

“We therefore call on all well-meaning Nigerians—across party lines, regions, and ideologies—to rise above division and join this noble and historic movement to rebuild, reposition, and rescue our nation for future generations.

“We also use this medium to formally communicate to political stakeholders, electoral institutions, and the international community that this position reflects the collective aspiration of Nigerians committed to credible leadership and genuine national transformation.

“To the media, we urge you to uphold the highest standards of professionalism—truth, fairness, and national interest—as you carry this message to the world.

“In conclusion, the Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group stands resolute, united, and fully mobilized to ensure that this vision of rescuing and rebuilding Nigeria becomes a reality in 2027. Nigeria shall rise again.

“Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the group concluded.

Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has announced the death of his wife after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The social media commentator shared the sad news on Instagram with a candle image, alongside a farewell message.

“Rest in peace my darling wife, odabo oyinbo mi”, he wrote.

Before her death, Fayose had opened up about the severity of her illness.

He said he travelled to Australia to spend time with his family, but was met with a painful reality as his wife had become extremely weak due to cancer.

He explained that she was no longer able to speak or carry out basic daily activities. According to him, the woman who once welcomed him at the airport could no longer do so, and he had to make his way from the airport by Uber.

He also described how roles had reversed in the home, saying he now had to take care of her, including cooking for her, as she could no longer do so herself. He added that he spent time beside her, singing her favourite songs, while she responded only by holding his hand.

In his emotional reflection, he also spoke about life and wealth, stressing that money and material possessions could not stop illness or death, and questioned the actions of those who use public office to take what belongs to others.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the submissions were completed on May 8, two days ahead of the extended deadline set by the Commission.

According to INEC, the extension became necessary after political parties raised concerns over the original timeline during a meeting held on March 24.

The Commission had initially fixed April 21 as the deadline for the submission of membership registers in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election.

However, following consultations with political parties, INEC announced on March 27, 2026, that the deadline would be moved to May 10, 2026.

The adjustment, INEC said, was made to align with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the actual dates chosen by political parties for their primaries.

Under the revised timetable, political parties are permitted to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026. The law also requires each party to submit its membership register to the Commission not later than 21 days before the date of its primary election.

INEC stated that all registered political parties complied with the requirement within the extended timeframe.

“The Commission is pleased to note that all registered parties submitted their registers as of 8th May 2026, two days before the extended deadline,” the statement said.

The electoral body added that the submitted registers would now undergo the necessary verification processes in accordance with the law.

INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible and inclusive elections in Nigeria.

According to the Commission’s timetable for the 2027 General Election, elections into the offices of President and members of the National Assembly are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027.

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the deputy commander of the Islamic State terrorist group, ISIS, has been killed in Nigeria.

US President Donald Trump said al-Minuki was killed in a “complex mission” carried out by Nigerian and American troops.

The US president shared updates on the operation in a social media post late Saturday.

“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” Trump wrote.

“Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing.

“He will no longer terrorise the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans.

“With his removal, ISIS’s global operation is greatly diminished.”

Trump also acknowledged and thanked the Nigerian government for its “partnership on this operation”.
