Row over N34m polling agents’ allowances deepens Labour Party crisis

The of Labour Party, LP, in Osun State, Prince Bello Adebayo, was on Tuesday suspended over allegations of anti-party activities and alleged embezzlement of N34 million allowance for polling agents in the 2023 general election.
Adebayo’s suspension was conveyed by party executives in his Ward 12, Osogbo Local Government Area, chaired by Hammed Sheriff.
Addressing reporters yesterday, Sheriff said: “Our suspending Bello Adebayo is hinged on Article 19(1B)(2B) sub-sections 2,3,4 and 5. He carried out anti-party propaganda and his failure to attend ward meeting about 10 times without cogent reasons.”
Subsequently, chairmen of the party across all local government areas, led by Raheem Taiwo-Ojo, passed a vote of confidence in the Acting State Chairman, Chief Sussan Ojo, and dissociated themselves from the ‘illegal’ suspension of the party’s National Legal Adviser, Akingbade Oyelekan and Sussan Ojo, by Adebayo.
Chief Ojo also alleged that the N4 million for publicity, released by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to Adebayo, was not paid to the LPPCC and, after the election, N30 million meant for polling agents given to Adebayo was embezzled.
“Comrade Lane Fadahunsi, who is the Southwest Coordinator of Big Tent, and Chairman of Media Committee of the LPPCC, Jimoh Babalola, featured on both radio and TV stations marketing Peter Obi and canvassing for votes. The funds spent on this were not given by Adebayo (as it was promised), it took the intervention of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Spokesman Dr. Umar Tanko, before he released part of the money.
“Also, polling agents tasked with the responsibility of submitting Form EC8A after the elections were not compensated despite the fact that he was given N30 million to pay them. Now the leaders of LPPCC are being chased around by these agents while Bello had collected and cornered their money.”
But Adebayo debunked the allegations, saying: “There’s no substantial executive for ward 12, all executives in Osogbo local government area are unhappy. Their tenure has expired because they didn’t even make the congress which was May last year. So there is no substantial executive for ward 12, and that is one of their failures.
“The only money sent to us then was N300,000, by Chief Akinosun Tokun, so the evidence is there and they can contact him. Aside that, I don’t know what transpired during the January presidential campaign. They have no locus standing to suspend any elected officers in Osun.”

Adeyanju blasts Obi, his followers over attack on Sowore

Deji Adeyanju, a human rights activist and lawyer, Saturday night, took.a swipe at Peter Obi, the ex-presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP and his supporters popularly called ‘Obidients’ over attack on the former presidential candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, Omoleye Sowore.
In a statement signed by Adeyanju and made available to newsmen, he said the attacks to disable Sowore’s Facebook page are undemocratic and meant to silence opposing voices.
He said: “It is disappointing that Peter Obi’s supporters, known as the Obidient group, ganged up to report Omoyele Sowore’s Facebook page simply because he keeps speaking the truth about their candidate.
“This shameful move led to the disabling of Sowore’s page. This is not democracy. If you truly want a better Nigeria, you don’t silence opposing voices.
“Let’s be honest: Obi’s time as Anambra governor was full of failures. Doctors went on strike, education suffered, and he refused to hold local government elections.
“The killings of MASSOB members under his watch remain unresolved. Yet his supporters work hard to paint him as a saint.
“He moved from APGA to PDP, where he ran with Atiku, then to Labour Party, showing he has no clear ideology. The PDP he served in helped ruin Nigeria.
“Sowore has always stood for truth and justice. These attacks by Obidient supporters supported and sanctioned by Peter Obi himself are aimed to hide the truth.”
However, he added that “Nobody hates Peter Obi, what we oppose are the lies and image-washing by his followers. We won’t let politics become a cult. Nigeria deserves truth and accountability.”

Mother and son in hot soup for defrauding US based Nigerian N64m

The Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, brought 58-year-old Ifeoma Joe and her 34-year-old son, Chima Mike Nmerem, before Justice P.I. Ajoku of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for allegedly defrauding a US based Nigerian of the sun of N74.4 million.
The pair is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, and advance fee fraud—allegations linked to a bogus spiritual scheme said to be connected to a murder case in the United States.
According to court filings, between September and December 2024, Joe allegedly posed as an associate of Evangelist Uma Ukpai, a renowned Christian preacher, and convinced the victim to part with millions of naira for “spiritual cleansing” and to allegedly bribe detectives involved in her son’s homicide case abroad.
“That you, Ifeoma Joe, between September 10 and December 17, 2024, in Oyigbo, Rivers State, obtained the sum of ₦64,486,180 from Mrs. Felicia Ekwutasi Ikeh under the pretext that the funds were needed for spiritual cleansing and to influence detectives in a U.S. murder case—claims you knew to be false,” one of the charges read.
Investigators allege that Joe, after being introduced by the victim’s sister, created the illusion of speaking directly with Evangelist Uma Ukpai using a fake voice over a spoofed phone number. The victim claimed she regularly received “prayers” and prophetic instructions from this impersonated cleric.
As part of the scheme, Joe demanded an initial ₦900,000 for an altar sacrifice, followed by further requests totaling tens of millions of naira. She also allegedly instructed payments for donations to orphanages, spiritual offerings, bribes for detectives, and even gifts to an employer who would supposedly rehire the victim’s son once spiritual obstacles were cleared.
Funds totaling $38,450 in naira equivalent were reportedly paid into a bank account operated by Nmerem, which was allegedly used to funnel the proceeds.
Both defendants pleaded “guilty” when the charges were read in court. Prosecution counsel K.U. Udus informed the court of a ready witness and sought an immediate review of the case, but Justice Ajoku adjourned the matter to May 28, 2025, due to time constraints.
The court also ordered that the accused be remanded in EFCC custody pending further proceedings.
