This is even as the Governor commended the State’s team for winning this year’s President Bola Tinubu interschools debate championship.

Governor Fubara sooke on Friday while unveiling the remodelled and fully furnished 105- bed Zonal Hospital in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.

The governor said the importance attached to the project was driven by the understanding that while lost wealth could potentially be recovered, lost health was much more difficult to regain.

“If you lose wealth, you have lost nothing, because so long as you’re alive, opportunity might come back and you might gain what you have lost. If you lose your health, you have lost something. It’s not an easy thing to regain a health lost,” he said.

In a statement signed by Onwuka Nzechi, Chief Press Secretary to the River State Governor, Fubara noted that healthcare was among the fundamental responsibilities of government, alongside the protection of lives and property and the provision of essential services.

The governor said the new health facility would serve communities beyond Omoku, Egbema and Ndoni, describing it as a strategic healthcare facility for the wider Rivers West Senatorial District.

“We know the importance of this, and that is why we pay very serious attention to the well-being of our people as a government. What are the primary functions of government? To protect life and property, and provide services. These services include healthcare, housing, and even the issue of the road.

“This facility is not just for Omoku. It is a facility that will also cater for the people of Egbema. It can also cater for the people of Ndoni, in serious cases. It can even take care of some part of people in this other side of Ahoada,” he said.

Governor Fubara appealed to residents and community leaders to take ownership of the facility and protect its infrastructure and equipment from vandalism and theft. He also urged the traditional rulers, chiefs and community youths to take responsibility for its security.

The governor said the facility was particularly important given Omoku’s position as the oil and gas hub in the state.

“We need a good health service at this point in Omoku, considering the kind of developments that are coming up here. This is the oil and gas hub of our dear state,” he said.

Governor Fubara said his administration was committed to completing projects to standards that would withstand scrutiny, while urging the media and the public to avoid circulating unconfirmed reports about government projects.

He said the administration had deliberately ensured that projects were completed with the necessary finishing touches before commissioning any of them.

Special Guest of Honour, the Oba of Ogbaland, Dr. Nwachukwu Nnam Obuoha Obi III, who commissioned the health facility, commended Governor Fubara for what he described as tangible development projects across the area.

The royal father recalled that the Elele-Omoku road commissioned on Thursday was in a terrible state for many years, adding that the intervention of Governor Fubara had changed residents’ perception of their apparent disconnection with the state.

“It was a place where we did not feel the presence of government, neither did we know that we are part of Rivers State,” he said.

Obi urged the governor to sustain the pace of infrastructure development during the remaining period of his tenure. The royal father urged Governor Fubara to remain courageous in order to leave behind lasting legacies.

The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, described the Omoku Zonal Hospital as a secondary healthcare facility strategically located in the Orashi region.

According to him, the three-storey facility includes support buildings such as a laundry, mortuary and staff quarters, as well as parking space for about 100 vehicles.

He said the contract was awarded on June 11, 2024, and that the hospital would serve as a referral centre for primary and smaller secondary healthcare facilities across Rivers West, particularly in Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Emohua and parts of Ikwerre Local Government Areas.

Governor Fubara has also congratulated Team Rivers for emerging champions at the grand finale of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Inter-Senior Secondary Schools Debate Championship.

The Governor described the students’ victory as “a great feat” and a clear demonstration of the intellectual capacity, brilliance, confidence, and preparedness of Rivers children to compete and excel at the national level.

Governor Fubara commended the students for their eloquence, critical thinking, and teamwork, while also appreciating their teachers, coaches, and the Rivers State Ministry of Education for the guidance and support that led to the outstanding performance.

“This victory is a source of immense pride to all Rivers people. It shows that our investment in education and human capital development is yielding results. Our children have once again proven that they are among the best in the country.
We are proud of you and we will continue to support programmes that build the minds of our young people,”the Governor stated.

He gave assurance that his administration will continue to create an enabling environment and provide necessary support for academic and extracurricular activities in schools across Rivers State to help the youths to excel in future competitions .

The Governor further urged other students across the state to draw inspiration from Team Rivers and strive for excellence in all their endeavors.

The All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has kicked against the appointment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo as the coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC) in the state.

It said in a petition to the PCC Director- General, Abdul’aziz Yari, that the appointment of a member of another political party is a threat to APC’s chances in the forthcoming general election in the state.

The party consequently called on Yari to urgently reverse Soludo’s appointment and appoint a credible, committed and suitably qualified APC leader in the state as the governor’s replacement.

Governor Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) is one of the two non-APC governors in the PCC. The other is Accord’s Ademola Adeleke of Oyo State.

In the petition dated October 13 and signed by the Secretary, Obi Okpala, the APC in Anambra questioned the rationale for overlooking the established leadership in the state and imposing a non- member on them.

· The petition is titled, “Formal expression of opposition to the appointment of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as Anambra State coordinator of the PBAT Presidential Campaign Council : A call for urgent review.’’ OnlineCasino Games

However, the state APC reaffirmed its desire and commitment to making sure that President Tinubu garnered over 80 per cent of the votes in the January 16 election.

AFE BABALOLA AT 97 — THE MAN AND HIS LESSONS

By Prof. Mike Ozekhome, CON

Happy 97th Birthday to a living legend, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, CON, OFR, FCIArb, LL.D,D.Litt, Founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti. A great man was born today, and Nigeria is still blessed by that birth.

When a man turns 97 and is still relevant, still building, still teaching and still healing, his birthday is no longer a mere episode. It becomes a national lesson and a celebration of life.

The man Afe Babalola is resilience clothed in humility, doggedness masked in simplicity. Born today in 1929, in a humble homestead in Ado-Ekiti, without any silver or golden spoon or privilege, he walked through life laboriously as farm labourer, Grade Two teacher, court registrar and became one of Africa’s most celebrated lawyers and educatioists. His life teaches that where you started can never define where you end.

From that humble beginning, he taught himself law by private study, passed all his examinations in flying colours and rose to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Today his name is synonymous with legal brilliance and integrity at the Bar for which he had shone and still shines for over six decades, and till date.

He is a builder in every sense of the word. At 80, an age many have retired from active service, baba founded Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD. What he conceptualized and built is not just a citadel of learning, it is a city within a city — vast farms, fish ponds, factories, industries, potteries, piggeries, electricity grid, and a world-class multisystem teaching hospital that rivals any in Africa.

At ABUAD, shining star shows that education must produce, not just certificate but societal relevance. The hospital has modular theatres, CT scan, MRI, ICU, dialysis and cutting-edge equipment. It is his gift to humanity, a proof that wealth is best measured by impact, not by loads of cash in the bank. .

Today at 97, the Aare still wakes up early mornings and sleeps late at nights, thinking of what to add, not what to take or rest on. That is the first lesson for today’s youths — hard work has no retirement age when purpose drives you.

The second lesson is that education has equally has no age limit. If a man who could not afford secondary school would later become a SAN and founder of one of the world’s leading universities, then no youth has any excuse to give up learning.

The third lesson is vision that works. Youths must learn that dreams must be planted like farms, nurtured like fish ponds, and built like factories. Baba Afe Babalola did not just talk vision, he manufactured, and walked it. He did not just dreamt dreams, he actualized them.

The fourth lesson is humility. With all his glittering array of titles, honours and massive wealth, our nonagenerian ( soon a centenarian, by God’s grace) still personally phones far younger ones like me,calling me “my son”. He still opens his doors, still listens, still advises, still mentors, still helps. Greatness that intimidates is fake;true greatness lifts. The Aare has epitomized the latter.

The fifth lesson is courage to start, even if late. He started his greatest legacy at 80. To every youth who thinks time has passed, Afe at 97 born today says you are still early if you start now.

The sixth lesson is integrity as capital. His name has remained untainted till date. In a world of shortcuts, he reminds youths that a good name is still better than silver and gold.

Today, as we celebrate him at 97, we celebrate more than age.We celebrate relevance. We celebrate patriotism. We celebrate impact. To live long is grace; to remain relevant at 97 is uncommon resilience.

Joining all patriots at home and in diaspora, I wish Aare Afe Babalola, the irrepressible advocate, courtroom gladiator, mentor of a generation, teacher of teachers, and philanthropist extraordinaire,a happy 97th birthday.May his hands be strengthened, his soul lifted, his muscles oiled, and his life prolonged ( Gen 6:3 ).

Born today, celebrated for all times. Happy Birthday, Papa.
