The battle for who becomes Delta North representative at Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber also known as senate from May 29, 2027 is getting hotter as former governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa has formally declared intention to contest the position.

Currently, Delta North senatorial seat is occupied by Senator Ned Nwoko, a prince, lawyer and businessman who is popular for his philanthropy and charity outreaches.

According to reports over the weekend, many political leaders from the senatorial zone, have already endorsed Okowa, to contest for the position in 2027.

The endorsement followed a consultative meeting held at the official residence of the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme.

The motion calling on Senator Okowa to run was moved by the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu,OON, seconded by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency.

The meeting had in attendance key stakeholders, community leaders, and political figures from across the nine local government areas of the district.

The leaders cited Okowa’s experience, political network, and track record as governor as reasons for their endorsement, noting that his presence in the Senate would further strengthen Delta North’s voice at the national level.

The leaders having unanimously reached the decision proceeded to the residence of Senator Okowa, where representatives from the three federal constituencies in Delta North spoke on behalf of their people, and with one voice they urged the former governor to contest the 2027 senatorial election.

In his response, Senator Okowa expressed appreciation for the show of confidence and accepted the call to run. He assured the leaders of his commitment to effective representation, noting that his years of service have strengthened his resolve to uphold the values of responsible and people-oriented leadership.

He also pledged to remain accountable to the people, stating that their endorsement would continue to serve as a reminder of the responsibility placed on him.

However, Okowa is sure to face as tough battle due the popularity of incumbent senator Ned Nwoko who is reputed to be one of the most effective legislative representative in Nigeria today.

Apart from been outspoken, Nwoko has sponsored many bills, much more than most of his colleagues. It is also to his credit that most of the bills sponsored by Nwoko are people oriented as they tend to seek ways to better the lives of ordinary citizens rather than the elites.

Apart from his philanthropy and charity works, Senator Ned Nwoko has provided several developmental projects across Delta North district and has as well, used his wife contact and influence to attract much more development to the people.

Added to the above is Nwoko’s mobilisation of human and material resources across Nigeria to realize one of his major focus at the national Assembly which is to see to the creation of Anioma state which he says would bring equity and justice for the South East geopolitical zone.

2027 is would surely be an interesting year for the people of Delta North senatorial district as these two illustrious sons step into the ring to pursue their destiny.
