NDLEA burst syndicate hiding under Hajj pilgrimage to smuggle illicit drugs
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has bursted a notorious drug syndicate that used Hajj pilgrimages as a cover to smuggle cocaine to Saudi Arabia.
The operatives also arrested key members of the syndicate in Kano, following the earlier interception of two Hajj-bound pilgrims attempting to traffic drugs out of Nigeria.
The suspects — Abubakar Muhammad, Abdulhakeem Muhammed Tijjani, and Muhammad Aji Shugaba — were taken into custody on May 27 and 28, 2025, in a follow-up operation prompted by the arrest of two men at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The duo, Ibrahim Umar Mustapha and Muhammad Siraj Shifado, were caught on May 26 while trying to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Jeddah. Intelligence-led scans revealed they had ingested illicit substances. Each later excreted 45 wraps of cocaine, totaling 90 pellets weighing 1.04 kilograms.
Investigations swiftly led to the arrest of the cartel leaders believed to be orchestrating this international drug operation, which NDLEA officials described as a sophisticated network exploiting religious travel routes.
In a separate bust at the same airport, NDLEA operatives on May 28 arrested 60-year-old businessman Chinedu Leonard Okigbo. Booked on a Qatar Airways flight to Iran, he also tested positive for drug ingestion and excreted 65 wraps of cocaine, weighing 1.41 kilograms.
Further crackdowns were carried out across the country. At the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Rivers State, NDLEA agents — working with Customs and other agencies — searched seven watch-listed containers between May 28 and 30. The search yielded 825,200 bottles of codeine-based syrup and trodol, with an estimated value of ₦5.77 billion.
In addition, officers confiscated 5.1 million pills of opioids, primarily Tapentadol 225mg, worth approximately ₦3.57 billion. The total value of drugs seized in these operations exceeds ₦9.3 billion.
On May 30, along the Kano-Maiduguri Road, NDLEA operatives intercepted two suspects — Abubakar Hussein (42) and Sahabi Adamu (53) — in possession of $900,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency. The fake notes and suspects will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation.
In another major operation, NDLEA recovered 390 compressed blocks of cannabis (skunk), weighing over 275kg, from an abandoned Toyota Sienna van on the Ngurore-Yola Road in Adamawa State on May 27.
Additionally, in Ilorin, Kwara State, a notorious female drug dealer, Alhaja Mutiat Abdul-Fatai, was arrested on May 31 in the Oja Oba area. Officers recovered various quantities of tramadol, flunitrazepam, and codeine syrup from her residence.

NHRC condemns extrajudicial killing by police in Delta community
….The Commission wants IGP to address use of excessive force by police
The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old Nigerian, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, on April 26, 2026, in Efurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Dr. Ojukwu described the incident as “deeply disturbing and a direct assault on human dignity, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the rule of law.”
He stressed that no Nigerian should lose their life at the hands of those sworn to protect them, reiterating that every life matters and must be protected.
According to him, “the reported action of the officer involved is condemnable, unacceptable, and completely inconsistent with the principles of justice and a civilized society.”
The statement which was signed by Hajia Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, quoted Ojukwu to have expressed grave concern over the recurring incidents of excessive use of force by law enforcement officers and called on the Nigeria Police Force to take urgent and decisive steps to address the issue.
He specifically urged the police authorities to subject officers deployed on special duties to periodic mental and psychological evaluations to ensure they are fit to carry arms and engage with civilians responsibly.
Dr. Ojukwu further called for the immediate disciplinary action against ASP Nuhu Usman in line with extant laws and police regulations.
He also emphasized the need for the Nigeria Police Force to fully implement the recommendations of the Commission’s Panel on Police Brutality as a necessary step toward meaningful reform and prevention of future violations.
“The Commission demands immediate arrest and a transparent investigation into the incident, dismissal of the officer involved, and swift prosecution in accordance with the law.
We hereby call for adequate compensation and justice for the family of the victim,” he stated.
He warned that justice delayed only deepens public distrust in state institutions and undermines confidence in law enforcement.
The Executive Secretary assured that the NHRC will continue to monitor the case closely and will persist in its advocacy for accountability, justice, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.
“Nigeria must never normalize brutality. Justice must speak louder than silence,” he concluded.
